A Resume Scanner that Doesn’t Work

I have been making my living as a computer contractor for quite a while now … this means that to get the next job I often have to send a new resume. Most applications just require a resume, sometimes a cover letter, occasionally a video. But that’s usually it.

There is at least one that I’ve seen twice this go-around “my workday jobs” … This is apparently a service that is sold to companies as a recruiting tool “scans resumes and sends the results to your database!” or something like this. The trouble is: it doesn’t work, not by half. I have maybe 15 contract jobs on my resume going back to about 2009, so I have to update the missing pieces on the scan … I don’t remember how long it took the once that I did it, but when I saw the next one come up … I marked that job “unsaved” and moved on to the next one.

I presume I’m not the only one and in fact I found this on Github.

Batman and Robin … the wrong one, though

Oops, I guess it’s not that Batman and Robin …

Maybe this resume scanner is more prevalent in other industries (poor industries!) But I don’t see it enough to matter.

I would strongly suggest anybody using it to recruit talent try an experiment: one accepting just a resume and one requiring a workday application … see which one performs better.

Also, if you are interested in talking with me after seeing this section of my resume, do get in contact! My email is mark@pythonsoftwarewa.com … Thanks!
