A Way to use TopGolf to Improve Your Game
This story is copyright © 2024 by Mark McWiggins as I hope to sell it to Golf Digest or possibly another golf publication.
TopGolf is a weatheproof (mostly) golf venue with a lot of else to offer: Foosball tables, a bar/restaurant, and much, more … the whole place covers 4 or 5 city blocks.
The hitting zones are divided into bays: on 3 levels … there must be 450 (?) or so of them.
The targets are listed in color (red for 25 yards, yellow for 50 yards, green for 90 yards, orange/brown for 150 yards … (others … Jess?)
You have several games you can choose from: play “virtual courses” Spyglass hill, Pebble Beach, .. (and a couple of others .. Jess?)
There is also “Angry Birds” … adapted from the popular video game.
There is also a standard Topgolf game and a practice session game.
The place is very noisy (birthday parties and whatnot going all around); if you are used to silent courses this may help you learn to concentrate … but to be fair all golfers know that a mistimed cough or sneeze in the middle of your backswing can mess you up much more.
The golf club selection for the games is impoverished; I found out on my last trip there, though, it’s possible to rent a Callaway Ping set for just $10, which I will try if my clubs aren’t back by then (they were in a car that was towed and I haven’t gotten back yet.)
Here’s how to effectively practice on Topgolf: ignore the score on the board. You can be aiming at the 25 yd target and hit the 50 yd or any other target and it’s like hitting a video game high score … but you get this score whether you hit the one you were aiming at or not.
Topgolf was founded (Jess?) and there are (x) locations bringing in (x) dollars a year.
