AirBNB still seems to be run by the three teenage founders

I stayed in my first AirBNB property this past weekend, and I was not impressed.

First, deficiencies in the web app are especially noticeable on the phone … trying to figure out the keypad code took me 5 minutes of poking around on my phone just outside the door.

Not just that, but there’s no easy way to search for a property that takes pets!

Also, there were a few problems at the property that may well be the fault of improper management:

  1. Internet service … the service was by Xfinity, and the host gave us her username and password to the service so we could use it. The problem? the username and password didn’t work while we were there. Also, username and password for this service (when they work) could be used by anyone anywhere until the password is changed. This in particular make Xfinity a crummy choice for Internet for a service like AirBNB.

(A better choice for Internet service: something like Verizon: has the password on small type on the bottom of the router, and it only works in range of this particular router.)

  1. Ice … the “ice bucket” was like this:

not even as handy as plastic ice cube tray, and nothing at all like a hotel or icemaker that should be in the fridge.

3. There was a Keurig coffee setup, ok … I didn’t see tea anywhere but found out later it was in the cupboard where I hadn’t looked. That one’s on me.

Next time: (1) VRBO? (2) A hotel …
