Sinus infection: how to the OTC drug manufacturers get away with it?

I was recently diagnosed with a dust mite allergy that has been ongoing for years.

The dust mite (not to scale)

I tried getting the carpets cleaned, getting the air ducts blown out, etc., etc. but these just provided short term relief.

I am taking both AllerClear from Costco one in the morning … this is 10 mg loratadine, which is the same active ingredient as in Claritin.

The Costco competitor

The other is Allegra from Chattem Inc. (fenofaxadine 180mg). I take one of these at bedtime.

The new pill on the block

These two have one thing in common.

After 3 hours …

That’s right, both of these trumpet on their covers “24 hour protection” but neither lasts more than three hours (for me.)

Maybe they work better for some folks? I’d love to hear of other experiences with these two.

In the meantime, I have two strategies, short term and long term.

Short term, keep plenty of hankies and Kleenex around.

Longer term: put in radiant heat in the next house we buy or build.

We lived in a house with radiant heat from 2000 to 2017 and I didn’t realize it at the time, but that’s the ideal environment for keeping out dust.

I had a brief episode with this around 2010 when I realized I was going about 10 days without changing pillowcases, but that was it.
