The Value of Recruiters
© Mark McWiggins 2025
I have been applying for jobs since I got out of high school in 1975. I have possibly more experience applying for jobs than anybody in the US; I don’t know for sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Most companies I’ve applied to do not have a clue on recruiting for jobs … a whole lot of them send you to this back end system that can take 30–45 minutes for one job application when you get to the stage of career where I am now: 30+ years of experience.
This is where the recruiters come in. A good recruiter will get the candidates’ email from a job site like Indeed or Dice.com or Monster.com or ZipRecruiter.com and then just email the intended a job description.
Why that works better: it takes only 3–5 minutes per job application rather than the 45 to 50 minutes it can take on the crummy job sites like Workday.
So any company recruiting should be sure to check that recruiters have a record of recruiting lots of candidates .. and that their phones work! I applied to Costco several times over the past few months and when I called their HR department to check in, they said “call our recruiter” … who never picked up!
My suggestions for how companies should recruit is mainly in another Medium article I wrote:
Thanks; that’s it for now.
